Emphysema Valves

Emphysema is the most representative form of CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE LUNG DISEASE (COPD).

The life of most patients suffering from COPD is characterised by unbearable dyspnoea. These patients may still choose to smoke however, this can prove to be an “enemy” and not a “friend”. Smoking can result in the destruction of the lung. The first time Emphysema valves were used in Greece was in our department in May 2014. This is now a well established treatment worldwide, that gives hope to patients where conventional drug treatment is ineffective.

The procedure is done through an endoscope, where we isolate the problematic area and then divert air towards the healthier areas of the lung. This increases lung function and provides the patient the opportunity to regain physical strength. Hospitalisation for 3-5 days is required for this technical procedure to allow the physician to monitor for possible complications post operatively.
